Cancer Detection Research

Our Research Approach
Research at D-Tails focuses on redefining early cancer detection through a non-invasive, biology-driven approach.
The investigation centers on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urine as early indicators of cancer-related processes. These molecular signals, often present before clinical symptoms arise, provide an opportunity to shift diagnostics toward earlier and more accessible detection.
To harness this potential, an integrated strategy combines synthetic biology, microfluidics, and data science:
● Development of bio-inspired sensing systems capable of recognizing cancer-associated molecular signatures
● Use of engineered cellular platforms to translate biological interactions into robust and controllable signals
● Conversion of these interactions into quantifiable optical outputs, enabling sensitive and scalable detection
● Application of advanced data analysis and artificial intelligence to interpret complex signal patterns and identify early indicators of disease
This approach enables a transition beyond traditional diagnostics by capturing functional biological responses and translating them into measurable, computationally interpretable signals.
The objective is the development of a diagnostic solution that is highly sensitive and specific, while remaining simple, scalable, and accessible enabling routine screening through a non-invasive urine test.
This research approach underpins the ULYSSES project, which has been awarded funding under the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder programme, recognizing its potential to transform early cancer detection through breakthrough innovation.

Impact
D-Tails is working to transform cancer detection from a late, reactive process into an early, accessible, and scalable practice.
By enabling non-invasive screening through a simple urine test, we aim to reduce barriers to diagnosis, improve patient compliance, and support the adoption of large-scale early detection programs, with a tangible impact on survival rates and healthcare sustainability.
Our cancer detection program was supported by Lazio Innova in 2023–2024, contributing to the advancement of our technology within the regional innovation ecosystem. In 2025, D-Tails was awarded the prestigious EIC Pathfinder Open, securing funding for ULYSSES (Ultrasensitive Luminescence-based Yeast Sensors for Specific Early cancer Sensing), a frontier research project coordinated by D-Tails and led by Principal Investigator Viola Folli.
Through ULYSSES, D-Tails is advancing the development of next-generation luminescent yeast biosensors, leveraging synthetic biology to achieve ultra-sensitive and highly specific detection of cancer-related molecular signals.
Our ambition is to make early cancer detection more equitable, widely accessible, and sustainable, bringing advanced diagnostics closer to real-world clinical and population settings.
